What Sayest Thou?
Elizabeth Woodville – considered a great beauty of her day. When Edward met her, he simply had to have her. She was a Lancastrian widow, a commoner, the mother of two, and six years older than Edward. He wanted her for his mistress. Edward was destined for a royal marriage with a French princess. But Elizabeth was no fool. She held out for marriage and it was Edward who couldn’t hold out. He secretly married her in 1464.
Elizabeth and her very large family were not well liked by the English nobility. The queen’s eleven siblings were suddenly in need of grand royal marriages. Her brothers were given coveted royal posts. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jaquetta of Luxembourg and Earl Rivers. Jaquetta was rumored to have dabbled in magic, spells and witchcraft. So rumors abounded that Jaquetta and/or Elizabeth had put a love spell on Edward. Did she?
Or was this truly a royal love match? She did give Edward ten children, but Edward was not faithful to her. He had several mistresses and a number of illegitimate children. So was Edward bewitched or bedazzled?
