THE TUDOR TATTLER
Who Will Dare Tell the Queen?
Spotted in a garden niche, was a certain charming Earl and an elegantly attired lady definitely absorbed in each other’s, uh … charms.
At first glance, it appeared to be the ultimate royal personage herself, but upon closer inspection, the lady in question was better padded and definitely much younger. (And as your on-the-ground observer had just left a Council meeting presided over by our glorious Queen and as great as she is, I’m afraid being in two places at once is beyond even her prodigious talents.)
Speculation about the Court for months has been that this royal favorite had tired of twiddling his thumbs waiting for Gloriana to decide if he was worthy to marry. True, she had told him time and again she didn’t wish to marry, but he had been hopeful. Because there were days when she did tell him most earnestly that she very much desired to marry him.
But it seems things have changed for our exasperated nobleman. Has he been smitten by Cupid? Or does he merely wish to goad his Queen?
Why else would he have shown such an interest in this beautiful young widow with 5 children? Rumor has it that her husband may have been poisoned and the dastardly deed done by none other than our rakish lord.
And she is cousin to the Queen!
Perhaps it is her appearance that has bewitched him. She looks so remarkably like the Queen. (There are those – heedless of the possibility of being headless – who claim that M’Lady’s visage is more fair, her form more pleasing and her wit less cutting)
Also, who among us has not heard the Earl bemoaning his heirless state especially when in his cups? His first marriage was childless. And we shan’t speak of the unfortunate “accident” that rid him of his first wife in the great hope that this might free him to marry the Queen. Alas, that plan has not come to pass.
Our lord is well into his middle age and possibly longs for a family of his own to fill the halls of his magnificent homes in Essex and Warwickshire.
With several children from her previous marriage, including a fine son, this lovely countess’s fertility is virtually assured. But is he willing to dare the wrath of the Queen who believes she keeps him still on a short leash?
Oh, he’s had his share of flings and even an illegitimate son, but could our slippery earl have been netted at last? If the latest rumors of a secret marriage, are true and the further rumor that mayhap the Lady is already breeding, the only remaining question is, who will dare tell the Queen?
