All the gossip that’s fit or unfit – gathered from behind the tapestries, under the bed or through the keyhole!
Ladies take cover!
The latest buzz around Court is that the King is searching for yet another wife. One that is lovely, but not as frivolous as his last. Mayhap someone older, a little wiser in the ways of loving a more mature king.
The betting seems to favor a certain lovely and wealthy widow, whose mother was Lady-in-Waiting to his dear departed and popular first wife. Tis said his new Lady Love is well-educated and has developed a love of learning that lasts to the present day. But will our lusty King be satisfied by a blue stocking?
She does have much practice in tending to elderly and ailing husbands. She just buried one. But rumor has it that she wearies of nursing sick old men and wants a little joy and excitement – and dare I say – lust in her life.
My spies tell me she has set her cap for a handsome and charming n’er do well who sits very close to the throne. The wedding seemed certain a short time ago, and was eagerly anticipated by the younger court circles who long for happy social activities once more. Tis true. Court has been somewhat anxious and depressing since the abrupt death of the King’s prior Queen.
There doth appear to be a fly in the ointment of those preparations as the King also woos her for her hand in marriage. Some say the reckless young cad is prepared to fight the King on this. Silly fool.
Yet the Lady is not anxious to play the loving nursemaid/wife yet again. It’s believed she longs for more amorous nightly exploits than she will find with the King. It’s also told – and I say this with my own pretty neck at risk of the block simply for thinking it – but tis said that rumors of the King’s codpiece have been greatly exaggerated.
What will she do? Will she choose fame, fortune and a crown over true love and a life of passion? Will love win out over duty? Will reckless bravery triumph over fear? Can a King claim treason if a woman says no to his marriage proposal? The gamblers are giving even odds.
